Teaching Numeracy Through Art

A workshop at the 5th National Adul Numeracy Conference:

Theme of the conference: Effective Teaching in Adult Numeracy - Linking Research and Practice.

Thursday 13 May 2004 in London

My appetizer:

At the workshop I'll give examples of how to use Art as an entrance to working with simple math problems. Examples and ideas are given with art pieces from established artists as well as art pieces made by the adult students. The latter grows from a self-made piece of art with simple figures into an object, which naturally involves calculations in the field of proportions, fractions, equations, the golden rectangle, permutations etc.. Websites with material will be recommended.

About my self:

Eigil Peter Hansen, teacher (29 years at VUC – Danish for Adult Education Cent re ), external examiner, text book writer, and planner of and coach on in-service training for Math teachers working with adults.

Right now I am working at VUC Syd in Copenhagen , where, besides teaching, I spend a lot of time developing new ways of flexible and web-based learning.
